OSUN ANA TO HOST AKANBI ALBERT AFESO




The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) Osun State chapter will on Sunday, 25th of February, 2018 hosts Mr. Akanbi Albert Afeso, a novelist and poet who is also a member of the Association.

Afeso was born in Nigeria on 31st of March 1982. He is a child rights advocate who works for the Federal Government of Nigeria at NASRDA and a number of NGOs as a volunteer.

He holds a B.Sc. in Economics from Delta State University and a Diploma in Persuasive Storytelling and Journalism from RNTC Media institute in the Netherlands.

One of his short stories was among 50 selected from 38 writers representing 16 countries that appeared in the African Book Club’s maiden anthology ‘The Bundles of Joy and Other Stories from Africa’s published in the United State of America in 2014.

As an alumni of the Sangam House International Writers Residency in India, his creative piece on the subject of dance and the writing craft was among the over 44 works selected from over 40 writers cut across 3 continents that appeared in the Vol. 3 of the Sangam House reader, ‘Other Windows’, published in India in early 2017.

His touching short story on the subject of rape and teenage pregnancy, ‘That Sunday Afternoon’, won the maiden WordMaster Writers’ Challenge Competition in May, 2015.

He hosts a column on NaijaGists Magazine, and writers weekly Op-Ed articles @ Premium Times. Ynaija! Newspapers and a host of other platforms.

He is the author of Edge of Patience, Cold Black Night and November 5, which was recently adopted into the Oyo State Book List for secondary schools literature students.

According to ANA Osun Chairman Mr. Muriola Awosemo, the event will take place at NUJ Press Centre, Osogbo, Osun state by 2:30Pm prompt.

ANA COMMISERATES WITH AKINWUMI ISOLA’S FAMILY



The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family and relatives of the late Yoruba literary icon, Prof. Akinwumi Isola.

A press release signed by Mallam Denja Abdulahi, the President of ANA on Tuesday, said they received the news of the death of the literary giant with shock and pray that his soul should rest in eternal peace.

The late Prof. Akinwumi Isola who wrote, produced and acted a number of movies, which include O leku, 1986; Efusetan Aniwura (1961/1962) passed on to glory on the 17th of February 2018 at the ripeful age of 83.

The release further described the deceased, who was a former lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University as a “literary icon who advanced Yoruba literature beyond our imagination”. 

The literary body also expressed their condolences to the family, current Executive Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi and to the people of the pen community for the loss of the literary icon.

Commends Denja Abdullahi led national exco for creating vibrant chapters.


Edo state chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) on the 17 of February,2018 re-elected  Mr. Goodluck Osama Ogbeide as its state chairman for another two years in office.
Before the election, Mr. Goodluck Osama Ogbeide was an incumbent Chairman of the chapter who was elected in 2016 for the first term tenure and was yesterday given a renewed mandate to lead the association for another term of two years, till 2020. He was returned unopposed.

Also elected were Mrs. Christy Omorogbe as Vice Chairman; Mackson Ode Esq. as Secretary; Mrs. Agatha Alile as Treasurer; Kelly Omo Ogbeide as Fin- Sec; Praise Anthony as P.R. O. 1; Barr. Olumide Enieyeye as Legal Adviser; Prof. Benji Egede as Ex- Officio 1; Mrs. Bisi Akpaida as Ex- Officio 2.

The election had Mr. Carmillus Ukah, ANA Vice President as a delegate from the National level, who witnessed and supervised the election amicably with the warm embrace of peace, credibility and fairness. The Edo State Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Amb. Ehi Joe was on ground to witness the peaceful and credible election.

During the screening exercise, the positions of the Auditor, P.R.O 2, and Asst-Sec were declared vacant due to the fact that the contestant were disqualified as they couldn't meet up with the criteria / guild lines stipulated by the Electoral committee. The vacant position will be occupied after a bye election which will be conducted by the newly elected state Executive as soon as possible with the promise that the names of successful candidates in the various vacant positions will be submitted to the National body, after the bye election.

In his acceptance speech, the re-elected Chairman thanked and appreciated the National body, with special appreciation to the National President, Mallam Denja Abdullahi for his quest of creating vibrant Chapters in his tenure and for giving ANA EDO a platform to grow through all vital supports. 

Finally, Mr. Goodluck Osama Ogbeide assured and promised all members of ANA EDO to increase his zeal for the promotion of a robust ANA EDO.

LITERARY GROUPS COMMEND AMBODE OVER THE YORUBA LANGUAGE PRESERVATION AND PROMOTION LAW




Fagunwa literary society and the Egbe Odo Onkowe Ede Yoruba have commended the Lagos State government on its directive all Lagos state-owned tertiary institutions to incorporate the use of Yoruba language in the General Studies courses and to make credit pass in Yoruba language at the SSCE level as one of the pre-requisite for admission into any of the state’s higher institutions.

The duo made the statement in a release issued and signed by their Coordinators Mr. Wole Adedoyin and Mr. Albert Ogini Olajutore in Ibadan on Tuesday.

According to the release “It is a welcome development. We are happy with the latest move of the Lagos state government in promoting, preserving and advancing the use of Yoruba language in Lagos state-owned tertiary institution. We are also ready to support the government in terms of enforcement and advocacy “.

Last week, Governor Ambode, flanked by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral resources, Mr. Olawale Oluwo, his information and strategy counterpart, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan and the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Akinyemi Ashade among others, formally assented the bill into law to provide for the preservation and promotion of the use of Yoruba Language and for connected purposes.

This development made Lagos became the first state to enact such law, seeking to preserve and promote its indigenous language.

The Society of Young Nigerian Writers (SYNW) has described the demise of Prof. Akinwumi Isola, the renowned author of O Le Ku, Efunsetan Aniwura as a huge loss to creative industry.

Reacting to the news of the death from his Ilesa country home where he had gone to attend a book launch, Mr. Wole Adedoyin, SYNW President said that he was yet to believe and come to terms with the reality of Prof. Akinwumi Isola’s death as it was hard to contemplate the void his passage has created.

Mr. Izunna Okafor the national secretary of SYNW lamented that the father of modern Yoruba literature passed away at a trying period in the life of the nation when his knowledge and intelligent are mostly needed.

“We wish to express our deepest condolences to the illustrious Akinwumi Isola’s family, him hometown and Oyo state in general. We further pray that God Almighty will give the family the fortitude to bear the grievous loss” Izunna added.
